La notion de « carte mentale » s’inscrit dans une diversité de contextes comme ceux de carte cognitive (cognitive map) ou de carte heuristique (heuristic map, mind map). Un premier grand domaine d’étude des cartes mentales relève de la géographie, de la cognition spatiale, de la neurophysiologie et vise à comprendre comment le parcours dans l’espace d’un sujet (ou d’un ensemble de sujets) peut donner lieu à une mémorisation et à une représentation interne. L’externalisation de cette représentation est habituellement envisagée sous la forme de dessin, de positionnement dans un graphe, de récits oraux ou textuels, mais elle se traduit avant tout comme un comportement dans l’espace qui peut être enregistré sous forme de trackings.
Un deuxième domaine d’analyse, plutôt orienté vers des usages exploratoires et combinatoires, (heuristic map, mind map) consiste à organiser des notions, concepts, informations sous forme d’arborescences ou de graphes pouvant donner lieu à des diagrammes et organigrammes. La visée est projective et à des fins de clarification et de découverte ou organisation et visualisation de données.
La notion de « carte mentale » sera donc envisagée selon deux significations et deux usages différents : 1) la représentation interne d’un espace parcouru (cognitive map) et 2) la représentation d’un ensemble d’entités ou de concepts (mind map). Les termes de « transcription mémorielle » pourront être compris comme la traduction et l’enregistrement sur un support graphique d’éléments présents mentalement, qu’il s’agisse de la mémoire d’un espace parcouru ou bien d’un ensemble d’informations ou de concepts à agencer. Les termes de « projection symbolique » sont conçus comme le fait d’externaliser par le biais de signes ou de symboles sur un support graphique les deux types de représentation qui viennent d’être évoqués : la représentation d’un espace parcouru ou la représentation d’un ensemble d’entités ou de concepts
Les points de contact, de croisement, de renversement, entre ce que l’on pourrait nommer de façon un peu caricaturale « représentation de l’espace » et
« espace de représentation » sont peu explorés. Comment mieux appréhender la notion complexe de « carte mentale » ? La question de la transcription mémorielle ? De la « projection symbolique » ? Pouvons-nous repérer des points de rencontre entre ces deux polarités et si possible un continuum ?

The notion of « mental map » is used in a variety of contexts such as cognitive maps or heuristic maps. A first major field of study of mental maps is related to geography, spatial cognition and neurophysiology and aims at understanding how the spatial path of a subject (or a set of subjects) can give rise to memorization
and internal representation. The externalization of this representation usually takes the form of drawing, positioning in a graph, verbal or textual narratives, but it translates first and foremost as behaviours in space that can be recorded in the form of trackings.
A second field of analysis, rather oriented towards exploratory and combinatorial uses, (heuristic maps, mind maps) consists in organizing notions, concepts, and information in the form of trees or graphs that can give rise to diagrams and flow charts. The aim is projective and for purposes of clarification and discovery or organization of data.
The notion of mental maps will therefore be considered according to two different meanings and uses: 1) the internal representation of a space travelled through (cognitive map) and 2) the representation of a set of entities or concepts (mind map). The terms « memory transcription » can be understood as the translation and recording on a graphic support of elements present in the mind, whether it is the memory of a space travelled through or a set of information or concepts to be arranged. The term « symbolic projection » refers to externalizing by the means of signs or symbols on a graphic support, the two types of representation which have just been evoked: the representation of a traversed space or the representation of a set of entities or concepts.
The points of contact, crossover, reversal, between what could be called in a somewhat caricatured way « representation of space » and « space of representation » are little explored. How can we better apprehend the complex notion of « mental maps »? The question of memory transcription? Of « symbolic projection »? Can we identify meeting points between these two polarities and, if possible, a continuum?
